“Oh, I just wanted to see if you wanted more cookies,” I said, trying to mask my curiosity with casual concern.
“We’re good, thanks!” she replied, returning to her work without a hint of embarrassment or mischief.
I quietly closed the door and leaned against the wall, a mix of relief and mild embarrassment washing over me. In that moment, I realized how easily a parent’s imagination can run away with them. I had conjured up all sorts of scenarios in my mind—scenarios that didn’t exist. The truth was simple, wholesome, and profoundly reassuring.
