3. Do Not Try Home Snakebite Remedies
Movies and television often show dramatic snakebite treatments, but many of these methods are actually dangerous.
Never attempt to:
-
Cut the wound
-
Suck the venom out
-
Apply ice directly to the bite
-
Use a tourniquet
-
Give human medications
These actions can worsen the injury, damage tissue, or interfere with the treatment veterinarians will provide.
4. Watch the Breathing
Since coral snake venom affects the nervous system, breathing changes are a critical warning sign. If your puppy is breathing heavily, keep monitoring closely.
Signs of serious breathing problems include:
-
Rapid panting
-
Very shallow breaths
-
Gasping for air
-
Weakness or collapse
When you arrive at the veterinary clinic, immediately tell the staff about any breathing problems you noticed during the trip.
5. If Safe, Note the Snake’s Appearance
If you saw the snake before the bite, try to remember important details such as:
-
The color pattern
-
Approximate size
-
Where the encounter happened
If it was safe and quick, a photo can also help. However, never delay your trip to the hospital or risk another bite just to identify the snake.
What the Veterinarian Will Do
Once you arrive at the hospital, the veterinary team will quickly examine your puppy and begin treatment. Depending on the severity of the bite, they may provide:
-
Oxygen therapy to assist breathing
-
Antivenom to neutralize the toxin
-
Intravenous fluids for circulation and hydration
-
Medication to manage pain or shock
-
Continuous monitoring of heart and neurological function
In many cases, dogs may need to stay in the hospital for observation for one or two days to make sure symptoms do not worsen.
Chances of Recovery
Although coral snake bites are serious, many dogs recover when treatment is provided quickly. The outcome depends on several factors:
-
How much venom was injected
-
The size and health of the puppy
-
How quickly veterinary treatment began
-
The location of the bite on the body
Smaller dogs and puppies can be more vulnerable because venom affects their bodies more quickly, but prompt treatment greatly improves survival chances.
